Fancy being a star of Starburst 2018?
We are looking for volunteers to help at Starburst 2018, find out more here about how you can attend this event as a volunteer and help hundreds of Brownies and their Leaders have an adventure of a lifetime!
What is it? Join us for our third Brownie Starburst event - a weekend of fun and activities including swimming, circus skills, games, crafts and spectacular shows at a holiday camp where we will have sole use of the facilities.
When is it? 5 – 7 January 2018.
Where is it? Butlins, Skegness.
How much is it? £100 for Brownies, Brownie Helpers and Young Leaders, £80 for Leaders and £50 for volunteer helpers.
When can I book? Bookings are now open exclusively for members of Girlguiding Anglia until 31 May 2017.
These will be updated as more information becomes available and more queries arise
How do I book to attend?
In order to make a booking for your unit, please download a booking form. We ask that you return this to the Girlguiding Anglia Office along with a deposit of £30 per person to secure your booking. Deposit payments must be made by unit cheque. Please note that deposits are non-refundable.
Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please ensure that your group has the correct ratio of Brownies to Adults - a minimum of 1 adult per 6 Brownies/Brownie Helpers (aged 12-14). If your group does not have the correct ratio, we encourage you to join up with another unit who may have extra leaders to cover this.
Can I add extra Brownies and Leaders to my booking later in the year?
Bookings are open until the 31 July 2017 and we can add extra members to your booking as necessary, provided there are still spaces available at the event.
Is there an age limit for attendees?
Girls must be in Brownies at the time of the event in order to attend. However, there is no maximum age limit for the event, as it is at the discretion of a leader as to whether a girl is still in Brownies aged 10+. We are unable to accept bookings from girls who are younger than Brownie age, siblings or leader’s children who are not Brownies.
What are the accommodation arrangements?
The accommodation at the event will be in chalets, which are terraced so not stand alone. Most chalets have two bedrooms. Adults will not be accommodated with girls in accordance to standard guiding practice but will be next door (or very close by) to them. Each chalet is lockable.
The accommodation arrangements are the same as the previous events in 2010 and 2014, which caused no problems for groups.
How are the rooms arranged?
The size of the accommodation varies across the site, but there are 3 types of apartment and each has two or three bedrooms (sleeping four to six people). Butlins will be allocating the rooms, but you will be allocated rooms according to your group name so you can decide who shares with whom. We try to ensure that groups are accommodated together in Districts, Divisions and Counties.
Each Brownie will need to bring a sleeping bag with them to the event as in some cases girls will be required to share a double bed, due to the layout of the accommodation.
For more information about accommodation you can visit the Butlins website
Will the site be secure?
The site will be secure. We have an exclusive booking of the site so the only people at the event will be Girlguiding Anglia and Butlins Staff, all of whom have DBS checks.
Will there be first aid on site?
Yes, we have a dedicated first aid team as part of the staff team at the event. If you have any queries or concerns relating to first aid or supporting your girls at the event, please contact us and we will be happy to discuss this further with you before the event. Leaders will be responsible for administering regular medication and basic first aid for their girls.
How will food and catering be organised?
All meals will be provided on site, on a self-service multi choice basis in the Butlins restaurants. The catering staff can provide for all medical and dietary needs as long as they know in advance – girls will need to indicate any dietary or other needs on their health form for the event.
What time can we arrive on the Friday?
Groups can arrive from 3 pm on Friday 5 January 2018. The event programme will not start until after the evening meal on the Friday, but you can use this time to register, settle in to your rooms and take a look at the site.
When does the event finish on the Sunday?
Departure from the event will be after lunch on Sunday 7 January 2018.
Are girls expected to leave school early on Friday 5th January to get to Butlins in time?
No, there is no need for girls to leave school early. You can arrive from 4pm but it is expected that those with further to travel will arrive later. The programme for Friday evening will be designed so that girls can join in as and when they arrive. Leaving school early will be a decision between the leader, the parents and the school. Dinner will be served until 9pm.
Is there a standard letter to go out to parents?
There is no standard letter to go out to parents as each unit will need to give their parents slightly different information such as transport arrangements etc. However, if you need help with a letter, please let us know.
