ASSK?
What is ASSK?
ASSK stands for Anglia Senior Section Konnekt and it is the way that all members of Girlguiding Anglia aged 14-26 can participate in Guiding at a region level. ASSK organise an annual event called Minivate, this is for young women to have fun and learn more about what is on offer to them. They can also find out about other opportunities and events, particularly during the Centenary year. ASSK is also responsible for promoting the 4 initiative in Anglia.
What is an ASSK rep?
Each county in Anglia has one or more ASSK rep who helps to organise these events, and also act as the voice of all young members on committees and executives. Click here to download the ASSK Handbook 2010.
Where can I get more information?
ASSK uses a jiglu space to communicate. Details of forthcoming events and opportunities are listed on the site and if you become a member you can get these emailed directly to you when they are posted. If you would be interested in becoming an ASSK rep for your county then you should contact your County Commissioner. We are also on Facebook - just search for 'Anglia Senior Section' to find us!
The first ASSK E-Newsletter was sent in March 2010, did you recieve it? If not email Tori at the Girlguiding Anglia office to add your email to the mailing list and click here to read all the news from the latest edition.
Who runs ASSK?
ASSK is run by Senior Section members for Senior Section members. There are currently two ASSK Co-Chairs, Rachel Butterfield and Pippa Gardner, who work with the Region Senior Section Advisor, Lora Harvey, and all the County Reps. Below are profiles of the Co-Chairs and Senior Section Advisor, click here to visit the County websites and find out who your County rep is.
Rachel Butterfield
Where are you from? I'm from a small village called Tiptree, which is made famous by Wilkins and Sons Jam! Tiptree is in the county of Essex between Colchester and Chelmsford, and I have spent the majority of my life here.
What do you do in Guiding and in the rest of your life? Within Guiding I run two Brownie units, I am the ASSK Representative for Essex North East and along with Pippa and Deb enjoy organising all the ASSK events. I am also working on my Queens Guide Award, and as a result have launched a badge (Love In Action) and travel the country helping Units complete the badge and explaining more about the other half of my life - my Ugandan children! In the real world, I lecture at a local university. I am studying for my Masters degree in Business and Leisure Management and teaching qualifications at the moment so that I can move to Uganda permanently and lecture in the University of Makerre, Uganda.
What is your most memorable moment from your time in Guiding? My most memorable moment within Guiding has to be the minute that I arrived at Entebbe Airport in Uganda. In that one minute my dream had become true, and all my Guiding friends and family had helped me to achieve it. As part of my Community Action element of my Queens Guide Award, I choose to build some classrooms at a school, and I had just arrived in the country to see them. Since, the country and the children have stolen my heart, and I intend to live and work in the country on completion of my PhD in 2012.
Pippa Gardner
