Girlguiding Anglia News and EventsThe Girlguiding Council has a new member...
Ellie O'Shaughnessy has just been selected to join the Girlguiding Council and we asked her to share some words about her new role:
"My name is Ellie O’Shaughnessy and I have recently been selected to be the new Girlguiding Council member for Anglia Region. I have been in the Girlguiding movement since I was 7 and have become increasingly involved in recent years. In 2015 I went on my first International Service Project with Girlguiding to Romania and it really opened my eyes to everything going on in the world which very few people get a chance to understand. My trip to Romania was life-changing and since then I have been longing to do another international service project and so in April 2017 I am going to Gambia to help in a school there also. It wasn’t until Romania that I truly realised my passion for volunteering which inspired me to become both a Young Leader and a Peer Educator which I enjoy very much and is often the highlight of my week.
I figured, because I enjoy Girlguiding so much and because I am so passionate about the movement, I should try and have an impact on some of the decision making. This, paired with it fitting perfectly for the Element 4 of my Queen’s Guide, motivated me to sign up to become a Girlguiding Councillor.
In my time with the council I hope to encourage the promotion of International visits to Girl Guides and Girl Scouts all over the world and expand on the possibilities of learning about other cultures as they become increasingly integrated in our lives. In learning about other cultures and visiting other countries I would hope it helps girls in the movement to become more confident about both themselves and the world around them: something that is key when growing up in the 21st Century. I hope it is a fulfilling opportunity and I can make a good impact!"
