WHAT IS TREFOIL GUILD?

Trefoil Guild is the non-uniformed section of the Guide Association for men or women over the age of 18 years who wish to maintain their links with Guiding.

Our prime aim is to give support to the Guide Association and in the local community. We provide our members with fun, friendship, and new learning opportunities We can give help and support to girls and adult leaders by helping at occasional meetings and camps, sharing interests and skills, testing badges, helping with the catering for Guiding events, offering hospitality and providing transport, and fund raising for worthy causes.

Story Gathering for 2010

Guiding Memories of a Trefoil Centenarian - Mrs Pearl Ely

Pearl 100 years

The members of the Southend East Trefoil Guild in Essex South East held a surprise birthday party for one of their members, Mrs Pearl Ely, who celebrated her 100th birthday on 2nd October 2007. She is an amazing lady who still lives on her own with daily help from her carers who visit her, and regular visits from family and Guiding friends.

At her party she talked about the days when she became a Guide at the age of 13, in 1920, when she joined the newly formed 1st Westcliff-on-Sea Guide Company. This company, which met at St Albans Church in Westcliff, was registered on 7th April 1921, and Pearl must have been one of the original members of the company. She remembered that her Guide Captain was Mrs Ethel Day, and the Lieutenant was Mrs Boyle. Later she joined 1st Westcliff Ranger Unit, which was also connected to the church, when she was old enough and remembers being in the Birch Patrol. She talked with fond memories about her camping experiences, and when she became a Nursing Auxiliary and Ambulance Driver during the 2nd World War, and taught first aid to the Air Raid Wardens.

In 1954 she became a founder member of the Southend East Trefoil Guild and regularly still attends their monthly afternoon meetings, sharing her experiences and memories with her fellow members.

Have you got any members in your County who have interesting stories to tell about their Guiding Memories? If so perhaps they could be interviewed by Guides and Brownies for this Story Gathering exercise for 2010.
