Our 2007 Region Trefoil Hautbois House Party

During the first week in May 28 Trefoil members from around the Region arrived at Great Hautbois House for our annual House Party. The week was being run by Eileen French and Gwen Wyman on behalf of our Region’s Programme Adviser Avril Braidwood who was poorly and unable to join us.

It was nice to greet old and new friends and and to investigate the Trefoil Lift which was going to be officially opened during our visit on the 1st May and to see the lovely improvements that had been done to Hautbois since we were last there.

The first evening was spent enjoying a stimulating Trivial Pursuit Guiding History Game organised by Eileen and chatting to our friends. When Tuesday morning dawned warm and sunny, we were eager to take part in the outdoor activities available which included orienteering in the grounds and riding the zip wire before the Lift opening ceremony later in the day.

After a delicious buffet lunch provided by Anne, the resident Hautbois cook, we all gathered around the lift ready for the lift-off. We were pleased to welcome several distinguished guests including Tricia Dundas, the Region Chief Commissione, and the Region’s Guiding and Trefoil Presidents. The lift was decorated with our Trefoil scarves and after a few words from our Region Chairman and President, Barbara Kippax and Paula Hewitt, Jean Wheeler, our past Trefoil Chairman and Wendy Rider, the past Chairman of the Hautbois Management Committee, were invited to cut the ribbon and take the first ride up in the lift. This was followed by everyone taking turns in riding up and down in the lift to the first floor and photographs being taken.

On Wednesday we all went on a day trip to the Norfolk coast and visited Sheringham and Felbrigg House. While in Sheringham many of us hit the Charity shops and the local market looking for suitable outfits for our Murder Mystery evening later that day. This was  great fun and everyone looked splendid in their improvised costumes as they went around the groups trying to discover who had done it!!!

Thursday dawned bright but colder and after breakfast many of us enjoyed the archery and canoeing activities that were available before our second outing in the afternoon to Fairhavens, a local Water Garden Centre built on the site of a private Broad. Here, we tied our scarves round the trunk of an old Oak tree and enjoyed a boating trip on the water before returning to Hautbois for our special final dinner.

After dinner we were entertained by a lady who ran a Hat Hiring firm which provided fine hats for special occasions. Everyone was matched up with a wonderful hat according to their outfit and given advice in how to wear a posh hat. Then, sadly, Friday morning arrived and it was time to return home with all of us looking forward to our next House Party in 2008 which will be in Netherurd in Scotland.
