Action for Change November 2018
Action for Change is a Girlguiding led social action programme for girls over 14. Girlguiding Anglia were lucky enough to hold their inspirational weekend, which kick-starts a 9-month long project at Pax Lodge, London.
Over 40 girls from across the region attended the event. The girls will be supported by Network Coordinators (and Winnie the guide dog) who are there to mentor and support them as they try to make positive change on something they’re passionate about.
The weekend consisted of several training sessions including spokesperson training, media training and social media support. We also heard from inspirational speakers including Gina Martin, who has hit the headlines with her determination to change the law on upskirting. We took part in some Craftivism activities with the Craftivist Collective and heard from a fellow Girlguide who has tackled mental health issues and suicide reduction through various programmes whilst at college in America.
Our girls have a challenge ahead of them but their determination and courage was as inspiring as the reasons they’d chosen to make change. Their projects include changing the voting age to include 16 & 17 year-olds, making all London Underground stations accessible, introducing mental health awareness in primary schools and changing the portrayal of females in the media.
We can’t wait to follow the journeys that these girls take as they commit to make a change in their world; we’ll be updating you all with the programme’s progress and sharing individual stories along the way.
Please join me in wishing them luck; we can’t wait to see the changes they make, the challenges they tackle and the successes they celebrate through #actionforchange
