Deputy chief commissioner’s blog – February 2025

We are now in February, a month where in Girlguiding we celebrate the birthdays of our Founders Lord and Lady Baden Powell.

It is a time for us all to come together on World Thinking Day, February 22, and celebrate the amazing organisation that we belong to and think about our Guiding Sisters across the world.

On a personal guiding level, I still feel honoured to be able to make a difference in the lives of girls and young women. Giving them opportunities and preparing them for the world today. I was lucky enough to begin my guiding journey as a Brownie, and there are things I still remember today, like how to wash up a knife safely…a simple skill but very important. I have seen many different uniforms and a few programme changes, all to move with the times and fit today’s girls lives.

Over the last century guiding has evolved, to benefit the members as we move through the years, girls today I am sure could not imagine helping the war effort, in this country, although across the world I am sure some of our members are living in war torn countries, and are keeping their guiding light shining despite the terrible conditions they are living in. Today’s girls live in a world that we are helping them to understand and accept. As well as having fun, and providing a safe space for them to grow in. We now have wonderful advisers in our region Inclusion team to help with any queries around disabilities, health and diversity. Find out more here.

As a region this year to celebrate World Thinking Day, 21,000 of us will be taking part in the Pyjama Party. Never did we expect such a huge response to what began as a small idea, but I am so proud that you are all giving girls the opportunity to experience a night away with their guiding friends, and learning new games, songs, and crafts form different countries.

I hope many of you are joining us at 4pm to renew our promises along with Karen the region chief commissioner and myself.

We can’t wait to see your pictures and here about what you all get up to.

Yours in guiding
