Who are peer educators?

Peer educators are 14-25-year-olds who help Brownies, Guides and Rangers explore important topics, such as mental wellbeing and gender stereotypes. They use their own experience to bring important subjects to life by running fun, safe and challenging sessions on a variety of topics. Peer education works because girls are more likely to relate to and listen to someone of a similar age to them. Peer educators empower girls to tackle issues and make a difference in their lives and the lives of people around them. To learn more, go to the Girlguiding website.

How do I become a peer educator?

If you are interested in becoming a peer educator and want to find out more, take the Girlguiding elearning. It will teach you what peer education is, how it works and your next steps. You’ll be asked to complete this before attending a training weekend.

Attending a training weekend will help you get the skills you need – from active listening, to delivering games and activities. Each training weekend covers one training topic. This weekend, we’ll be covering Think Resilient which is all about building mental wellbeing and growing resilience. To book onto this, download and complete an application form.

As a peer educator you’ll have an important role in protecting yourself and the girls you work with from harm and creating a safe space. Completing our safe space training will teach you how to do this. We have a special a safe space e-learning for 14-17-year-olds. Over 18’s need to complete a Safer Guiding. You can find these on Girlguiding’s learning platform.
