Summer Activities 2020

Summer Activities 2020

As we come to the end of a very unusual term, we want to thank our amazing team of volunteers and all our young members for continuing to shine their guiding lights. It’s amazing how all members of our organisation have pulled together to support each other, their families and their communities. There have been some phenomenal stories shared and posts across our social media platforms have made us all smile even on the tough days during lock down.

Summer is a time for us all to relax, refresh and maybe even reflect on the last few months and what lies ahead as we move towards a new normality. Please ensure you find the time to recharge your batteries, step away from your guiding responsibilities and just focus on your own wellbeing for a while.

We know that some of our leaders want to offer some activity through the summer holidays and perhaps even attempt an outdoor meetup. Girlguiding has shared all the information you need to do this on their website.

There may also be some leaders and/or parents who are looking for some fun activities to do through the holidays so we’ve listed some links below that we thought you may find useful. We are also launching a brand new design competition, open to all our members.

Whatever you get up to this summer please take care of each other and stay safe.

This summer why not take part in our ‘Design a Postcard’ competition. All members can take part, the full details and closing date are available here.

Region Challenge Packs

The Midsummer Sleepover Challenge 2020 was full of over 20 different activities for members and non-members. If you’ve already taken the challenge why not try some of the other activities? Or if you’re yet to give it a go why not challenge your whole family to take part. Badges are still available from the region shop.

Our first virtual challenge Rhymes, Riddles and Rambles gives you an opportunity to do some creative writing. We’ve had some amazing entries from all age groups that we’re continuing to share on social media platforms. There is now also a physical badge that you can order and all entries receive a virtual certificate and badge.

Two years ago we joined forces with Essex County Cricket to create our Smashing Boundaries Challenge. This challenge is packed full of activities that the whole family can try, don’t forget to share your pictures with us on social media and order your badges once you’ve completed it.

2020 is the Royal Astronomical Society’s 200th anniversary. To celebrate this we launched a partnership late last year and created a challenge pack to encourage our members to learn more about females in space and take on some challenges. Why not download the challenge pack and have a go? Badges are still available too.

Explore Heraldry with Girlguiding’s Heritage advisers, and The Heraldry Society

Beasts, Banners and Badges is a colourful challenge for all those aged 10+ looking for something new to learn. Exploring local history, design, mythical beasts and the middle ages, it has something for everyone.

Stage one asks you to find out the basics, and think about your county badge and local coats of arms. You can also design the coat of arms you might like for yourself, or explore some family history. Once you have got the heraldry bug, you can go on to learn more in stages two and three.

The challenge pack contains all the information you need to get started and The Heraldry Society have produced a booklet to explain the basics.

You can find a series of lessons ‘Heraldry for Self-Isolationists’ on the website of the Court of Lord Lyon.
